1.1 This test method covers the determination of yarn number of all types of yarn in package form, subject to the limitations as to stretchiness and size given in 1.2 and 1.3. Provision is made for expressing yarn number in the tex system and in traditional numbering units.
1.2 This method is applicable to yarns which stretch less than 5% when tension on the yarn is increased from 2.5 to 7.5 mN/tex (0.25 to 0.75 gf/tex). By mutual agreement it may be adapted to yarns which stretch more than 5%, by the use of a lower reeling tension than specified in the method.
1.3 This method is applicable to yarns finer than 2000 tex. It may be adapted to coarser yarns by the use of shorter skein lengths than those specified in the method and of reeling conditions agreeable to the parties interested in the test results.
1.4 The following seven options are provided according to the procedure used to calculate the moisture content, or the content of moisture and finishing materials:
1.4.1 Basis of Unscoured Yarn: Option 1 -Yarn at equilibrium with the standard atmosphere for testing textiles. Option 2 -Oven-dry yarn. Option 3>-Oven-dry yarn plus commercial moisture regain.
1.4.2 Basis of Scoured Yarn: Option 4 -Scoured yarn at equilibrium with the standard atmosphere for testing textiles. Option 5 -Oven-dried scoured yarn. Option 6 -Oven-dried scoured yarn plus commercial moisture regain. Option 7 -Oven-dried scoured yarn plus commercial allowance (commercial moisture regain plus allowance for finishing materials).
1.5 The determination of yarn number can be combined with the determination of the breaking load of skeins, and this method gives the sequence of steps to follow.
Note 1-Other methods for the determination of yarn number have been approved for specific fibers including asbestos, jute, and glass, as follows: Specification D299, for Asbestos Yarn, Specification D541, for Single Jute Yarn, Specification D578, for Glass Yarn, and Method D681, Testing and Tolerances for Jute Rove and Plied Yarn for Electrical and Packing Purposes. For the determination of yarn number of specimens ravelled from fabrics, refer to Method D1059, Test for Yarn Number Based on Short-Length Specimens.1.6 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.>
